QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

What have you accomplished through your Oak-funded programme that you’re most proud to share with your colleagues?

  • We co-developed a mentor and staff training with innovation Research & Training (iRT) available here.
  • We designed and managed an innovative pilot program to enable BBBS agencies to be better serve over 500 youth at high academic risk, including students with learning differences and disabilities.
  • We trained agencies on the use of three new evaluation tool and data collection instruments designed to help them become more data-driven in their provision of services.
  • We developed and delivered over 20 hours of staff and mentor training on promoting non-cognitive skills essential for academic success.

What’s the most interesting challenge your Oak-funded programme currently faces?

  • The most interesting challenge facing our partners centers around our efforts at Compass Academy to simultaneously achieve and drive outcomes in student achievement, social emotional development and bi-literacy. Not only is Compass Academy a new endeavor that requires rapid learning and improvement, but we are also trying to do something different and dynamic in education — instill in students, teachers, staff, and families the core Learner & Leader competencies that enable success in today’s rapidly changing world. There is no existing blueprint for how to get this right, which means we must be vigilant in documenting what we learn so that, in the long-term, we create a plan that benefits and inspires others in our community and the field.

Roadtrip Nation creates multimedia products and videos that help young people figure out the age-old dilemma, “What should I do with my life?” Through its grant, it produced a documentary entitled Being You showcasing the cross-country journey three young people with learning and attention issues took to interview adults with learning and attention issues who embarked upon inspiring career paths.

Producing a documentary that helps young people who learn differently envision college and career success

ABOUT THE ORGANISATION

Roadtrip Nation is an organisation dedicated to helping people find career and life fulfilment. Its founders Nathan, Mike and Brian didn’t know what to do with their life after college graduation, so they decided to travel the country asking people who do what they love how they figured it out. Fifteen years later, they’ve travelled over 500,000 miles, talked to over 1,000 people, and developed a host of career development products, including an educational curriculum, personalized online tools, video content, bestselling books, and live events. Together, these tools create a diverse and relevant collection of resources showing young people the vast scope of careers and possibilities.

ABOUT THE OAK FUNDED  PROJECT

With Oak’s support, and in partnership with Understood.org, Roadtrip Nation created Being You, a documentary that follows three young people with learning and attention issues as they travel around the country on a four-week road trip seeking to find their roads in life and define their possible futures. The “road-trippers” interviewed interesting and inspiring people who, like them, have learning and attention issues. Each person they talked to had a unique story to tell, and each has built a life of personally fulfilling work. Through Being You, families can learn about how people with learning and attention issues have forged successful careers. The documentary is available for viewing online on the Roadtrip Nation website, PBS.org, Roku, Apple TV, Windows 10 and Amazon Fire TV.
